The BEST Compliment
A few days ago, one of Adam Barruch’s dancers paid me one of the BEST compliments I’ve ever received. “You’ve created the perfect residency program here,” he told me. “You’ve got it all! A wonderful theatre with a great stage, a perfect length of time for a residency, a wonderful and helpful support staff, a beautiful town, great housing for the cast and warm and welcoming local supporters . He may have added more, but I got lost in his haze of good will.
I will always remember those kind words. Some people don’t like receiving compliments, but I’ve always appreciated the heartfelt ones. Call me needy.
I personally agree we must be doing something right, because each DANCEworks residency contains its own special magic. We do our best to give our choreographers what they need to realize their own creative vision. The whole always adds up to more than the sum of its parts. Along with hard work, each residency is outweighed by the joy that accompanies the work. There’s nothing more gratifying for me than to think back to the beginning of the residency and realize all that’s been accomplished in these fast moving weeks. What existed only as a creative impulse has been brought to life.
Adam has repeatedly told me, “This residency opportunity is a dream come true.”
“It’s just pouring out of him,” his co-workers have said. I view it as the perfect meeting of the right talent and the right time and the right place.
“It (this residency) has been a gift,” Adam has told me.
“No, you are the gift,” I have told him.
We ultimately agreed that it’s a perfect win/win/ win/win. Win for dance, win for Santa Barbara, win for Adam and his dancers and win for DANCEworks and our vision.
